As a former teacher and investment research analyst, now a dad to two daughters aged 6 and 3, my journey has always intertwined with education in its myriad forms.

My career in investment research, which entailed delving into industries, businesses, and the complexities of human behavior, surprisingly laid the groundwork for my most intriguing venture yet: parenthood. Navigating fatherhood has proven to be a challenging yet immensely rewarding “research project” in its own right. It encompasses a broad spectrum of learning, from exploring the multifaceted nature of education for our children (and questioning what “education” truly means) to understanding who our kids are as individuals (and helping them be their best selves) to fatherhood (and what it means to be a great father in an ever-evolving world).

This journey has been enriched by insights from family, friends, and various structured groups I'm involved with. Through this Substack, I aim to create a dual-purpose space:

  1. Journal for personal reflection and growth, and

  2. Platform to cultivate a network of parents. Here, we can exchange insights, challenge each other's perspectives, and collectively navigate parenthood.

Flytcraft is based on a storyline from Dashiell Hammett's detective novel, The Maltese Falcon. In a pause within the narrative, the detective, Sam Spade, recounts a seemingly unrelated tale about Flitcraft, who experiences a life-altering moment when he narrowly escapes death due to a steel beam falling at a construction site. This close call leads him to dramatically alter his life and can be seen as a metaphor for how a single moment can dramatically shift one's self-perception and life trajectory.
